You know those memes going around Twitter right now that are like, “dream blunt rotation”? I’ve seen all kinds of names tossed around—Phoebe Bridgers, Fiona Apple, Harry Styles—but I’ve never had my own answer before. Well, friends of The Music Enthusiast, I do now: Laurence DaNova. Maybe add Jodie Foster into the mix as well.

What first struck me about “Rest Easy” was that it was exactly what I’ve been looking for. There’s lots of reverb, and the colorful synth kind of feels like a warm bath with a bunch of sunset-colored Lush bath bombs disintegrating under a running faucet. Then there’s DaNova’s voice. It’s smooth, warm, and clear, and it contrasts nicely with the synth. Ultimately, it seems like more of a pop voice—beautiful, not gritty, and not muppety like certain men’s voices can sound once they turn away from pop or R&B.

It’s easy for a chill song like this to go nowhere, but DaNova includes interesting textural details throughout, studding his billowing synth chords with staccato rhythms, snaps, and other accessories. But just when you think the song really might not go anywhere, it builds, intensifies, and gains more depth as it goes along. I love how it kind of disassembles itself toward the end, building up and down and back up and back down again. I had trouble absorbing the lyrics since I was so enamored sigh the music, but when the song ended I knew I needed to hear what he had next.

Laurence DaNova’s track is a dreamscape for fans of Tame Impala, The Weeknd, Lewis Del Mar, quite possibly Slenderbodies, and any song that might’ve cameoed in a John Hughes film. Ultimately, “Rest Easy” is the perfect song to put on once your edible kicks in, which is to say it’s pretty much what I’ve always been looking for. Laurence, on behalf of my stoned self two hours into the future—thank you.
