Written by: Devyn Browne
Indie pop darlings half•alive have returned with a new track that demands all of your attention. The Long Beach trio - consisting of vocalist Josh Taylor, bassist J. Tyler Johnson, and drummer Brett Kramer - formed in 2016 when Taylor did a 50 songwriting challenge. Since then, the band has amassed over 1.6 million monthly Spotify listeners, gained critical acclaim for their debut album Now, Not Yet, and created a viral music video for their 2018 single “Still Feel.” - currently sitting at 52 million views.
Their latest single, “What’s Wrong”, is half•alive’s most energetic and engaging track yet. It has the perfect balance of standing out both musically and lyrically from the pack, but could still easily find a home on your favourite pop radio station. “What’s Wrong” shows just how much half•alive has grown as artists, both sonically and lyrically. Known for their top-notch lyrics, the band describes the feelings most people may have experienced in the past year, whether it be stress from the current state of our world or getting the opportunity to self-reflect in a period of down-time.
The band took to Twitter to talk about the song, stating ‘After searching for “the perfect song” for so long, this one finally felt like it was it. Not because it was perfect, but because it was honest. It felt like it confronted the stack of problems that is piling up faster than the stack of solutions.’
The new single is accompanied by a music video featuring choreography from frequent collaborators JA Collective.
