Merci Releases ‘Subtle Fiction 1’
Written by: Katrina Yang
Like chapters of a book, “Subtle Fiction 1” depicts the aftermath of heartbreak. From the cinematic opening of “The Palm” recreates the dramatic moment of unexpected heartbreak to the temporary celebration of freedom in “Never Coming Back” driving down the oceanside, breathing in that salty air, the D. C. alternative band Merci takes fans on an emotional roller coaster.
Travel, nature, alcohol, and party only savor the bitter aftertaste till the next revisits. We numb the part that hurts and pretend that everything is ok. Feelings eventually catch up despite our effort trying to forget. “Haunt Me” is on the darker side of loneliness and depression.
An ending is the start of a new beginning. True healing only comes after hitting rock bottom. The first step of letting go could be a new look. “City Haircut” is all about finding strength and new life after the old has ended. Unlike the first taste of freedom one tries to fool himself in “Never Coming Back,” “City Haircut” is a cautious, mature attempt to recollect the life without. Hope returns, but not without the lingering hurts.
A change of look is just the beginning. The journey of letting go is often one step forward and two steps back. “Foolish Me” returns to an emotional low point. Sadness and contemplation may seem like dwelling in the past, but reflection is a necessary phase of moving on.
The story is to be continued.
