You might recognize this alternative/pop singer from the Canadian band Motel Raphaël, but she creates music for her solo project as well. With the band, she’s toured with Tegan and Sara, played festivals like Osheaga and SXSW, and even played a set on Parliament Hill for Canada Day one year. Maya Malkin wants to experiment more in the music industry, and hopes that her opportunities will only grow from here, and her second single “Hostage” will just get you hooked on her music.

Her debut single “Making Moves” is about not knowing what you want to do in life while everyone else around you is out in the world making moves, hence the title. Her newest tune still doesn’t have the happiest meaning, but it does have an empowering silver lining to it. The main lyric in the chorus explains what the single is about; ‘it’s getting obvious nothing I do will ever be good enough for you’, talking about a partner who doesn’t really appreciate what you do for them, but you came to that realization and you know you deserve better in the end.

Knowing the meaning of the song, it may surprise you to know that “Hostage” is upbeat and catchy, and it’s one of those songs that makes you tell yourself you’ll only play it one more time, but then turns into a hundred more times. If you’ve been treated poorly by a past lover, then I highly recommend playing Maya Malkin’s newest song on full blast and dancing to it like no ones watching.
