Maude Latour is Magic in “Headphones”.

Written by: Emma Wallace

Maude Latour is done being heartbroken. Her new single “Headphones” picks up after the conclusion of her breakup EP Strangers Forever, and she’s shining brighter than ever—this song is about existing for only yourself and embracing the miracles of life.

“Headphones” reflects on the experience of appreciating her own art: putting on a pair of headphones, blasting a song she wrote, and being able to say “I did that”. She discovers that she only needs herself and her own dreams, singing ‘I read the letter that I wrote to myself in my sleep and I know I’m okay’. This is an especially powerful message for anyone who has struggled with being alone, as “Headphones” encourages the listener to become their own best friend.

Latour’s sound has been one-of-a-kind since the start of her career, with a distinct alternative/electronic indie pop sound that contains traces of Lorde but remains entirely her own. Her lyrics are infused with intoxicating imagery and philosophical reflections on love and finding a place in the world. It seems that every song she releases pushes Latour closer to her most authentic self and her desired sound: in an Instagram story, she even says of her latest work

“I think, really, really, this is the most truly me song I have made”. Maude Latour is building her own universe, one we get to peek into through her music. Through the heartbreak, healing, and everything in between, one fact remains true: this universe is absolutely magical.
