To be frank, witch prophet was a new one to my ears until she and her partner stepped on to the stage. Although, they didn’t fail to gain my full attention.

The East African singer-songwriter and collaborator Sun Sun played songs from the2020 album DNA Activation and singles like “Energy Vampire”, which was recently put out on all streaming platforms. Between every tune they played, producer Sun Sun would queue the catchy “witch prophet” moniker (it is still stuck in my head, I’m not kidding - great marketing idea!). As mentioned before, witch prophet’s Erykah Badu-esk sound fully peaked my interest.

Her four piece band took the stage first, and was shortly followed by Alexa Dirks (AKA Begonia). Just from then, she won “Best Dressed at a Show” in my brain, clothed in a lovely red dress, high heeled boots, and a silver chained necklace.

The set started off on high energy with “Right Here”, which had most of the audience singing along, then was followed by songs from her latest Powder Blue and Fear.

The audience’s love for the Winnipeg bred artist could be felt easily, laughing at her jokes and harmonizing with her lovely vocals. Speaking of, Begonia’s voice was even more breathtaking than heard on her albums. She hit every high note and more!

Begonia’s show could easily be compared to Lewis Capaldi’s, where one moment you’re crying to ballads and the next you’re trying to catch your breath from laughter. This was my first show of hers, but definitely not the last!
