In the words of B-Rabbit (Eminem), “Now, everybody from the 313, put your hands up and follow me!” Detroit-based Pop artist, Yueku, kicked off the summer with his second single entitled, “Mindreader,” on May 27th. This melodic track perfectly fuses a sad boy anthem with an 80s vibe and it’s just what we didn’t know we needed.

Emerging into the music scene as a solo artist, Yueku aims to make music that he would be excited to find if someone else was making it. “If people can connect to my music in any way, or find consolation in it, I’ll be ecstatic,” added Yueku.

In describing himself as an artist, “I like clarity and crave structure. Music and all art are subjective, but I appreciate when artists or songs know exactly what they want to be and represent themselves as such. I’d like to think that clarity comes off in my music. It’s just pop songs.”

Although it may be just a pop song, “Mindreader” has the lyrical depth to resonate with more than a few people. Tugging on metaphors relating to astrology and horoscopes, Yueku describes the complicated relationship between two people regardless of the effort put in.

The lyrics, “Don’t you feel it in the stars? That maybe we were meant to lose,” sheds light to the trajectory of the relationship. A difficult conclusion for anyone to come to, but especially for the person who gives and gives to no avail.

Inspired by the frustration of being in a one-sided relationship, Yueku wrote this song about wishing a partner would be straightforward about their feelings and what they want. When asked if this track was written from personal experience or inspiration outside of his life, he responded, “It was a little bit of both. It’s always somewhat personal but I’ve found that having an outside perspective for your own scope of a feeling or situation can make it easier to write.”

One of those outside perspectives came in the form of his friend, Jake LeMond, who helped co-write throughout the song’s development. “We wrote it on a guitar and piano so we could solely focus on the song before diving into production. We wrote it in three hours,” added Yueku.

Other collaboration included his friend, Nick Matzkows, who aided in the production alongside Yueku. “He works fast and sonically. Our palettes are very similar which made it easier to bring the track to life,” he added.

It’s not hard to tell that Yueku has a story to tell, and it looks like he will utilize his music to do just that. He is just getting started and his creativity is flowing. When probed about new music this summer, Yueku commented, “Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, for sure. Yes.”

On that note, go stream “Mindreader” now out on all platforms. You may want to just keep it on a loop until the next release.
