You’ve recently gone through a breakup, you start to feel happy on your own, then you realize that your past person has found a new one…. then all the not-so fun emotions come rushing back. With their new EP being released today, titled sucks to see you doing better, Toronto based quartet by the name of Valley speaks up about how chaotic being alive could truly be.

Track 1: “sucks to see you doing better”

Being a huge fan of the quartet myself, I was speechless after my first listen of the title track. The band has never disappointed me, so I knew it would be a masterpiece - but I did not expect it to be THIS good. They have outdone themselves…. and this is just the first song off the EP! Just another reason why Valley is one of my personal favourite bands of all time. “sucks to see you doing better” starts off slow, then you’re taken by surprise with an explosion of sounds, then the chorus which is full of beautiful harmonies and a catchy melody. One lyric that caught my attention was “I’ve been dying since the day I was born”, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Track 2: “nevermind”

Next up, is the first single that was released from this EP. After the release of their album MAYBE, and a chill mix of their tune “There’s Still A Light In The House”, “nevermind” was put out into the world during the summer. With lyrics like ‘my friends say I'm narcissistic, it's probably true but I'm sick
And tired of feeling like this’, the song is an anthem for introverts and people who deal with self-pity. Also, I loved how the drummer, Karah James had a solo for a few lines! I must’ve listened to this tune about 100 times in the week of the release, yet it still gets better every time I listen to it.

Track 3: “homebody”

The third track is all about being a ‘homebody’ basically, staying home all day on the internet, watching time go by. The band played around with fun sounds throughout the song, like when the word ‘psycho’ and ‘black hole’ came up, which added a unique touch to it. Like the other songs off the EP, this tune is an extremely catchy one, and very relatable, especially with quarantine.

Track 4: “BE THE ONE”

This is one of those songs you find yourself bopping your head to in the oddest way, because there’s just so much going on, but you’re enjoying it so much. “BE THE ONE” speaks of love, and The Office. Valley referencing one of my favourite shows is definitely my favourite thing that has happened yet. Also, needless to say that the outro at the end of the song is so unexpected, yet so great.

Track 5: “hiccup”

Being the second and last single that was released before the project, it left us wanting more after hearing “hiccup” for the first time. It’s a super catchy breakup anthem, with lyrics explaining it like “why do I miss you like I miss you, now you’re out of my life” and “damn we were something, now we’re nothing, and I miss what that’s like”. Also, on lyric that hit me hard in the gut was “do you ever think about coming back to kiss my mouth?”, just proving to us how talented the group is at writing songs. The lyrics may sound sad, but the song is an absolute tune!

Track 6: “hiccup (acoustic)”

The last track off of sucks to see you doing better, is an acoustic version of “hiccup”. As if the song couldn’t get any better, it does indeed!
