When “The Space Between Us,” a debut single from the artist Phantom, starts, it seems like it could turn into a synth-pop track, a dance rhythm supporting a simple electronic melody. Then the haunting vocals start: “I want to remember/ you just the way you are.” The phrase is framed over the heartbeat of a drum and then joined by an opening guitar, power chords that fit into the song like a puzzle piece. The vocals continue to climb and layer as the instrumentation builds, and a short call and response between the voice and the instrument begins before giving way to a guitar solo remarkably imbued with emotion.

The song channels the sparkle of some great new wave bands, but adds this disco-rock touch that makes it feel fresh. I’m really excited to hear the rest of the album.
