nodisco.’s latest single, “Pretty Blue Jeans & Me,” marks a turning point in the narrative his fans have known for so long. The artist’s debut album/mixtape, Who Knew I’d Write Songs About You?, followed the journey of a specific relationship from tender beginnings to tough fallout. Now, nodisco. shifts gear and paints a picture of ‘an idealized relationship with someone he’s never met.’
The track is carefree and reminiscent of youthful daydreams and freedom. Breathy backing vocals and the circular instrumental melodies make things seem like they’re simple and hopeful – like a summer day with the sun in your face and a breeze in your hair. An electric guitar bridge ties this romanticization of an idealized relationship with a stranger all together.
The artist starts off by admitting, “I still need to recover from another lover,” hinting at the relationship he’s been talking about in his past songs. But still, he’s willing to take a risk and see where this new fling could lead. “What should we do tonight? What if this breaks your little heart and mine? Let’s just find out.” There’s something quite whimsical about the way the song is written and sung. But nodisco.’s realization is that “she’s what I need.”
Perhaps after the mental and emotional strain of his last relationship, this could be a breath of fresh air. After all, there always is that adrenaline that comes with facing the unknown with someone new.
