Joshua Bassett Digs Deep in “Doppelgänger”.

By now, most people have heard the name Joshua Bassett. After the release of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License” in January 2021, fans drove themselves wild trying to piece together the details of their alleged relationship, decoding clues in both artists' music. Through this drama, however, the music itself is often forgotten. With his new single “Doppelgänger”, Bassett proves that there is more to his songs than the rumors behind them.
“Doppelgänger” is a stark contrast from his most recent trio release, “Crisis/ Secret/ Set Me Free”. It’s soft and reflective as Bassett bares his heart and confesses “I guess I’m not as over you as I thought”. This track is slower, more raw somehow: Bassett’s smooth vocals and the simple production almost make the listener feel as though they’re intruding on a private concert or a deeply personal confession. This personal feeling is not artificial, as Bassett based the song on a true experience.
The single is accompanied by a breathtaking music video, co-directed by Joshua Bassett himself and Elle Mills. Like the song, the video is cloaked in a bittersweet feeling as viewers are carried through golden-tinted montages and scenes of a past love. It’s the perfect companion to the single, and well worth a watch.
Wistful and reflective, “Doppelgänger” shows just what Joshua Bassett can do with his music. Fans are still anxiously waiting for an album, but this latest single will surely keep them busy until that day comes.
