The Horn’s debut album People Like Us is the culmination of three years of the band steadily unpacking a series of singles, each of which strike the balance between thought-provoking songwriting and catchy indie-rock. We got to chat with the band around the release in an interview full of humor.
Hey The Horn! Can you please start by telling us how the band came to be and the story behind the stage name?
It all began as a studio project in a cobwebbed, underground piffling little studio in Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes used to meet beautiful dancing girls and weep in butcher shops. Generally speaking Nicolas [True] took care of lyrics, I polished the melodies and Daniel [Monk] took care of the textures. But often roles would switch round, like wonderful little roleplaying wizards. Then I summoned Alexander [Moss] in to tap the timpani and Daniel forced Edward [Cox] to give up his side hustle of gooseberry punting and play keyboardery. Nicolas named the band ‘The Horn’ because of an exquisite dream he had about a rhinoceros, and before you could say whippety-whip, we were supporting Starsailor on our fourth gig. Bloody hell.
Your debut album “People Like Us” is finally here. Can you share the inspiration behind the title and how it reflects the theme of the album?
Absolutely not!
How has the band’s musical style evolved since your debut EP, Do It Now and what can listeners expect from “People Like Us”?
It has evolved about as much a bunch of colourblind hedgehogs, in a bag.
The band has members born decades apart. How does this intergenerational exchange influence the creative process, and what message does it send to the industry about age in music?
It has influenced the process more than Einstein has influenced our understanding of the cosmos and general relativity. It sends no message, other than: it is possible to work with people who are different ages.
With the album release and upcoming tour, what are the band’s plans for the future? Are there any specific goals or milestones you’re aiming for?
We would like to travel by zeppelin to the King of Lapland and give him a jolly good time!
