Escape in ‘Powder Blue’ - an Interview with Begonia.
Interviewed and written by Sarah Evangelista
Begonia is the powerhouse project of Alexa Dirks. She started her solo project in 2016 by releasing her debut single “Gun Has No Trigger”, followed by her first EP Lady In Mind. Fast forward to now, Dirks has released debut full length project, Fear, a live version, and her recent addition Powder Blue via Birthday Cake Records.
While various projects focus on storytelling, Powder Blue focuses on the feelings it evokes. Whether you’re crying to “Cold Night”, or swaying your head to “Right Here”, Begonia masters the art of producing emotion on listeners.
“‘Powder Blue’ felt like a calm place loaded with emotion. For me, it’s the color of my wallpaper as a child, my baby blanket, the Virgin Mary shawl and all the plays I was a part of in church as a kid. Or like the sky, and a light poppiness but then powder blue also feels electric to me, like a powder keg blowing up.”
Begonia and her three piece band are currently on tour, celebrating the release of Powder Blue (buy tickets here). I got to sit down and interview her before she hit the stage in Montreal last week.
