The Come Back of Rock & Roll - an Interview with BabyJake.

Interviewed by Sarah Evangelista

The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin….

Those are all classic rock bands you have either listened to intensely, or simple heard of. They were simply iconic.

Though, are there any artists creating something similar today?

The answer is yes; BabyJake.

You've been playing with music from the age of 8. What is your fondest musical memory?

My fondest thus far was Lollapalooza 2022. 6,000 people was the biggest crowd I’ve performed in front of & that was a magical moment. Especially hearing all those voices singing. Amazing. Pure joy. Love & Peace.

Aren't We Ever Gonna Be More Than Friends? is an incredible project. It almost feels like a live session recording. Was this intentional?

Well it was. I recorded it with a drummer, bassist, & lead guitarist all at one time. The takes were literally 1 takes of whatever we felt was the best take. Of course we did some minor overdubbing, but it literally was live. Some of it to click, some of it not. Loved every second of the experience.

When creating an album, how do you know it's finished?

It’s never finished. Never will be. Story of my life.

In a previous interview, you mentioned wanting to work with someone like Stevie Nicks. Have you watched Daisy Jones & The Six?

Yes I have. Great show, I found it amusing & funny as well. Great actors especially Camilla Morrone. Great role.

With Daisy Jones & The Six's album release and artists like Oracle Sisters and yourself, do you think there may be a big return of 70's music in today's sound?

I think Rock & Roll in general is coming back big time. People want real. People want live instruments. People want mistakes & imperfections. I don’t know who the Oracle Sisters are, but I assume they rock as well. Yes, I believe Rock music is on the up & up.

You're headlining a tour in celebration of the new project soon and most of the venues are pretty intimate. How do you take advantage of the closeness to the audience, and why do you think playing small venues is so important?

Small venues rock. Especially if they’re packed to the brim. I love the intimacy & crave it. I’ll never forget these moments… As to how I play into that… You’ll have to come to the show & see. I consider myself a pretty “active” performer.

What are your must haves for a headline tour?

A great band.

Who are your favourite artists/bands right now?

Varying all the time. Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Wilco, ABBA right now.
