Four years after their debut album, ROOKERY, Giant Rooks released their sophomore album, How Have You Been?, on February 2nd.
The fourteen-track project draws from their classic sound, yet explores new avenues where they now embrace the difference. Although there were plenty of songs that didn’t make the cut, Giant Rooks plans to carry them over for a junior and/or senior album in addition to songs they plan write through their inspirations drawn from tour and those they meet.
After spending two years writing their first album, the band feels more confident and has developed skills as songwriters. For this new album, “The approach was to write timeless songs,” says the band. A switch flipped when it came time to write this album and they knew just what they wanted — a classic band album.
Giant Rooks takes pride in their claim of remaining adventurous and trying new things with their music as they aren’t big fans of repeating a recipe, despite its success. Their song, “Somebody Like You” was deemed as one of their most challenging songs in this new era for the band.
While it is not the most challenging song, “Bedroom Exile” draws on challenging internal struggles one may face. The meaning behind “Bedroom Exile” and its chaotic music video is how it is a way to describe the feeling of depression which has been a struggle among members in the band.
Aside from exploring new avenues through their music, the band has also learned a few new things as they continue to grow as musicians through their gained experiences, such as touring. Their confidence and comfortability in saying, “No” is one of the few things. The band shares that saying “No” can help you improve, get better, and be more successful. According to the band, it can be especially helpful with songwriting and your whole career.
With that, it’s safe to say that Giant Rooks stood firm on saying “No” when creating their new album allowing them to continue in the direction of being adventurous and drawing from their own experiences.
