Beyond “Greek Tragedy”: The Wombats release ‘Fix Yourself, Not the World’.

If you’re on Tik Tok, chances are you remember when Oliver Nelson’s “Greek Tragedy” remix went viral last year with The Wombats’ electric lyrics “We’re smashing mics in karaoke bars/ You’re running late with half your makeup on…”. This year, The Wombats are proving yet again that they don’t go out of style. Fix Yourself, Not the World is an ultimate 2022 album that couples the band’s energetic indie rock sound with a profound message. As the name suggests, Fix Yourself, Not the World encourages listeners to be more introspective at a time when the outside world is so confusing and chaotic. Each track contributes to an overall bittersweet feel—cynical at times, cheerful at others, but always cheeky and bold—much like the ‘reluctant optimist’ referenced in “If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You”. Most impressively, the Wombats have shown that after almost twenty years, they can create music that is strikingly relevant while keeping their roots; their lyrics are reminiscent of early 2000s angst, but the album experiments with an electro-pop sound. If you’re looking for an album that will make you think and make you dance, Fix Yourself, Not the World will not disappoint.
